Dear Reader,
As the year draws to a close, I warmly welcome you to the Winter edition of “Solutions,” the newsletter of the European Solvents Industry Group (ESIG). It has been a busy and challenging year for all of us, and this edition offers a comprehensive review of the work and projects of the past months, as well as a glimpse into the exciting initiatives we can look forward to in the coming year.
Safe Use of Solvents: New Safety Films Coming Soon – Kicking off 2025, we are thrilled to announce the release of new safety films on IBC and static electricity, developed in collaboration with the Solvents Industry Association (SIA). These films are part of our ongoing commitment to promoting the safe and responsible use of solvents. Our successful training programs with SIA, which provide invaluable insights into solvent safety, are also highlighted in this edition.
Highlights from Brussels: General Assembly Insights – This edition also covers our annual General Assembly held in October in Brussels. George Kapantaidakis, Director of Industrial Policy at Cefic, delivered an inspiring speech on the pivotal role of the chemical industry in Europe. Discover the key takeaways and strategic discussions that will shape our industry’s future.
Looking Ahead: European Coatings Show 2025 – Mark your calendars for the European Coatings Show in March 2025 in Nuremberg. ESIG’s participation promises to showcase the latest trends and innovations in the coatings industry. Get a sneak peek at what to expect and why this event is a must-attend.
Solvents – Simply Essential: Monthly Highlights – Our “Solvents – Simply Essential” initiative continues to highlight the indispensable role of solvents in everyday life. Each month, we present new examples that underscore the versatility and importance of these chemical compounds in achieving the goals of the Green Deal.
Substance-Specific Initiatives: Ensuring Safety and Compliance – Special attention is given to our substance-specific work, such as the new DEGME data initiative by the Oxygenated Solvents Producers Association (OSPA). This project aims to close critical knowledge gaps and enhance supply chain safety. Additionally, learn about the UK HSE’s review of a higher hazard classification for 2-Butoxyethanol (EGBE) and OSPA’s response. The Hydrocarbon Solvents Producers Association (HSPA) is also advocating for a reassessment of Canada’s risk classification of gas oils and kerosenes based on new toxicological findings.
Innovative Research: Robotic Exposure Studies – Finally, delve into our cutting-edge research projects, including the ESIG-supported exposure study with robots. This study provides valuable data to optimize exposure assessments and ensure the safe use of solvents.
Take your time to explore much more information in this edition. As usual, we appreciate your feedback. If you have any comments, contributions, or questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
With my best personal regards,
Rob Oades
